When we were all in our early 20s, a guy friend and I introduced our respective best friends and they really hit it off. They dated for a couple of months but he started to cool off because she was moving too quickly, talking marriage and making demands about diamonds. He told her he wanted to slow things down – not break up, mind you, just slow it down. She did not take it well.

A couple of us were having dinner together when he showed up. She’d been calling him for hours and leaving angry voicemails when he didn’t answer. He wanted to end it so he called her. At some point he put it on speakerphone and she was threatening him. “If you break up with me I’m going to tell my mother you raped me. I saved the condom from the last time. You will go to jail.” She and I stopped being friends that night.

The last couple of weeks have been a couple of high profile rape cases collapse in the UK. Basically, they’ve followed the same pattern:

  • Couple has sex.
  • There is lots of evidence on his phone that it was consensual. Text messages saying what a great time she had, photos showing them wrapped-up in bed wearing post-sex grins, the lot.
  • She decides a week later it was rape. Police investigate, arrest him, confiscate his phone as evidence, charge him.
  • A year later – and about a week before it comes to court – the police finally reveal what they took off the phone. And it includes all the text messages and photos.

That’s a year these men have had to put their life on hold. A year they have to explain to friends and relations that it’s not true. A year they’ve heard “no smoke without fire” mutterings under people’s breath.

Frankly, they’re lucky the media has picked up their stories.
